Don't Bin 'Em!

Don’t Bin ‘em – Give them to us!

2nd February 2010

From the first of February Whittakers will be able to collect and recycle your old batteries free of charge. Over 1 billion batteries are thrown away in Britain every year and as batteries are classed as hazardous waste this is not good for our environment.

Some batteries can contain chemicals such as Lead, Mercury, Cadmium and Lithium which are all likely to end up in a landfill site once you throw them away. As the batteries start to break down they can begin to release these harmful chemicals into the ground causing soil and water pollution which can be dangerous for the local wildlife as well as our own health.

We are currently, recycling less than 3% of portable batteries, however the European Directive states that 25% of all batteries placed on the market must be recycled by 2012, rising to 45% by 2016. Do your bit with us and help to reach and exceed this number.

Remember that the most environmentally friendly batteries you can buy are those that are rechargeable!

Whittakers can also collect and recycle a number of other items, such as used ink cartridges, ink toners, mobile phones and computer equipment.  To find out more information please contact a member of our customer service team on 01509 243878 or email sales@whittakeroffice.co.uk
